Goodbye, Bitbucket!

I’ve been using Bitbucket for many years, but it’s time to say goodbye. Bitbucket was my code hoster of choice because it supports my favorite version control software – Mercurial. As Bitbucket decided to sunset Mercurial support, there’s really no reason for me to stick around on Bitbucket. I’ve decided to pull all projects off Bitbucket and move them onto GitHub, which you can find at github.com/anteru. I’ve tried to update links to it on this blog as well so everything should continue to work.

I’m a bit sad to see this go, as Bitbucket was the last big hoster with Mercurial support. The future for Mercurial remains unclear; I’m still hoping for the Rust-ification of Mercurial to bring back more interest in this tool. Facebook seems to be still running on Mercurial and is backing it; same as Mozilla. For me, it remains the easiest to use distributed version control system, so I’d like to continue to use it ☺️ For now, some private project will remain on Mercurial (mostly due to the ease of using largefiles with it), but the public projects have been all converted to git.
