Enjoy the ride

May 25th, 2009

Sounds like the new slogan of a car maker, but this post is about the beautiful song by Morcheeba named “Enjoy the ride”, from the album “Deep Dive”. While I have mixed feelings about the album, I’m absolutely astonished by the song “Enjoy the ride”, which is also the opener of the album.

First and foremost, the lyrics are incredibly good. Even if you just read them, you can feel the emotions and the hopeful message in them. It’s not a funny song, nor one with a happy background, but it’s surely about hope, and making the best of the life.

Second, it’s perfectly executed. The instruments and the voice fit perfectly into the mood, and together with the lyrics you can close your eyes and go on a real deep dive while listening to the song. The instruments are never intrusive, and there is nothing which interrupts the flow of this song.

A great moment is halfway through it, when the vocals set out for a moment, and you can hear the pure melody. After that, you get caught by the melancholic voice again, exactly at the right moment.

You should try to listen to the music first, and watch the movie clip afterwards, as it’s equally superb and you’ll have a hard time not to think about it when listening to the music again. So for the best experience, try the music alone first, and watch the clip later, and you’ll be rewarded twice for it.

Regarding the rest of the album, it also has a few highlights: “Run honey run” is a really great, especially the lyrics, “Gained the world” is close to “Enjoy the ride”, and beautifully sung, and finally there is “Au -delà”. Compared to these, the other songs seem to have gotten less polishing. They are all very different, and they all manage to set up a mood, by for me they lack this special kick that makes “Enjoy the ride” not merely good, but an amazing piece of music.

So, stop searching for good music, just enjoy the ride!

Music gem: Baba yetu

September 5th, 2008

I’ve found a real music gem, and that in a place where you wouldn’t suspect it: The opening menu theme in Civilization 4. The background track (which could be very well the main theme for a major blockbuster movie! And they have put it as the menu background!) is Baba Yetu by the composer Christopher Tin.

You’ve gotta hear this song. It’s really incredible, perfectly sung by Stanford Talisman. Let’s hope that this incredibly talented Christopher Tin will continue to provide songs like this, I’d buy an album full of this right away.

[Update] Until the album comes out, you can download this song for free on his page. Don’t miss this chance!

I found a reason

June 2nd, 2008

Well, funny post title, but it fits in two respects: Finally I found a reason to post again, and the reason is the song “I found a reason” from Cat Power.

It was quite a long time since I recommended a song, but this one surely deserves it. A very simple song, with just the piano in the background, and yet so powerful. I’m listening to it since more than a year from time to time, and each time, it makes me shiver.

What comes is better than what came before

This song is sad, with Cat Power’s voice sounding fragile and a bit lost, yet it gives hope. It’s also very short, with simple lyrics, but it’s a real gem which you should have heard at least once.

It has been also used in “V for Vendetta”, if you watch the movie, just at the end when Eve comes back to V to dance before she leaves after he has tortured her, he’s playing it from his jukebox (if I remember correctly, quite some time since I watched the movie the last time).

Stay tuned for more posts in this section, as I’m busy buying music recently again. Currently, I tune in to “Enjoy the ride” from Morcheeba’s new album “Dive Deep”, but I’m not sure yet whether to recommend it — gotta play it for some time first.

[Update] “I found a reason” was played at a different scene.

Don’t leave home

May 16th, 2007

I’m still music addicted, but I didn’t come around to post something in my music category for quite some time now. Here we go, with another “must-have-heard” song from one of the best artists I ever had the chance to see: Dido, with her incredible song “Don’t leave home” from here album “Life for Rent”.

I’m pretty sure you have heard it already, as it was a quite successful. As every Dido fan knows, it is not a song about love, but about addiction, but feel free to interpret it in your own way. What you should do is watch the video, it is really wonderful. Just make sure it’s silent while listening to this song and try to listen to the lyrics and think into a situation where someone is in need, and this song gets a really deeper meaning. It’s a song that cheers me up every time I hear it, and even after having heard it a lot of times, I’m still fascinated by this melancholic, yet hopeful song… “So close the blinds and shut the door / you won’t need other friends anymore”.
